★ Telstra shops, or lack there of

I just found it hilariously funny that the Telstra Shop in Inverell opened at midnight for the iPhone 4 release, but not a single Telstra Shop in Newcastle did. Population wise Newcastle and Lake Macquarie have a combined total of 400,000+ versus the 9,749 (source) residents of Inverell.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. When the iPhone originally launched in Australia among the list of Telstra Shops that opened at midnight was the one in the town of Dubbo, population 30,000+, meanwhile there were none open in Newcastle.

Some times I just don’t get Newcastle, we wanna be a city, but we wanna be Our Town a friendly town. Our infrastructure is lacking in many areas, and not 2 days ago one of the local Liberal Party elects shouted down the National Broadband Network (NBN) in the Newcastle Herald, something that is sorely needed in Newcastle as in some areas our DSL sucks, and in other areas it’s impossible to get a connection as none of the providers are rolling out new dslams.

Hopefully projects like The New Lunaticks Society gain more traction, and garner more attention, to help bring better resources to Newcastle, Australia’s 6th largest city.

PS. Yes I did manage to secure an iPhone 4.

★ Mad Men pick up lines

Back when I was single, and living in the late 50’s / early 60’s, this video would’ve been indispensable. That is of course if YouTube was also available back then too, I’m envisioning a time machine of some sort. Anyway, I digress.

★ The Social Network [trailer]

The official trailer for the Facebook / Zuckerberg inspired movie, The Social Network, has just been released. Looks like reasonably good viewing, colour me surprised.

Think it’s in cinemas some time early in October.

★ Photos from Fiji

It’s been a while since I wrote anything here. Apart from being a little lazy of late when it comes to blogging, I’ve also been on holidays over in Fiji.

I had really great time in Fiji, despite Travis having a fever the first 3 days, and basically just played a lot of golf, drank a lot of Fiji Gold, and lazed in and around the pool. It was the most relaxing holiday I’ve had in a long time.

Here’s a bunch of photos… Enjoy
