The new Kindles look quite nice, for now though I’ll reserve my opinion until they end up in the hands of real people in real life situations. Personally, it’s highly unlikely I’ll buy one for use as a tablet / iPad replacement as pretty much everything I have is Apple / iOS and for me to swap out now to a different operating system and different apps would just be far too painful.
That said, they still look quite nice and if I was new to the market I’d certainly have a hard decision to make between an iPad and the Kindle Fire HD.
One of the takeaways for me from today’s press function was that Amazon, unlike Nokia and Motorola yesterday, know how to actually put an event on and create some excitement. It didn’t seem forced in the way that Nokia’s did when they showed the latest Lumia phones yesterday. Their sneaky little advertisement on TV the night before, started the buzz and Jeff Bezo’s did a stellar job as the company pitch man.
And one last point, and this is a BIG one. Amazon still managed to stuff this whole thing up by not making it an International release. If you live in Australia you’re crap out of luck as you’ll only be able to buy the Kindle Paperwhite. You cannot buy any of the new Kindle Fires direct from Amazon.com and ship it to an Australian address. No doubt we’ll eventually get access to them, but in all likelihood we’ll end up paying over the odds for them locally (also known as the Australian Tax).
Anyway, here’s the announcement from Amazon.
Today we’re excited to introduce the all-new Kindle Fire HD.
Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ 4G isn’t just the best tablet for the price, it’s the best tablet. $499 now gets you a large-screen HD tablet with a stunning 8.9″ display, exclusive Dolby audio, dual stereo speakers, the fastest Wi-Fi, ultra-fast 4G LTE wireless, plus our new unprecedented $49.99 one-year 4G data package. Customers save hundreds of dollars in the first year compared to other 4G tablets. Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ is also available in a Wi-Fi only model for $299.
Kindle Fire HD is the world’s most-advanced 7″ tablet, with a stunning HD display, plus the same exclusive Dolby audio, dual stereo speakers, the fastest Wi-Fi, and 16 GB of storage. Kindle Fire HD is just $199.
PS. So where was this “exclusively confirmed” rumoured Amazon phone? Sure it’s likely they are working on a phone, but why would they take the gloss off of the new Kindle Fire’s with a phone that’s likely half-baked?
PPS. Is there a video for Shit Tech Reporters Say?
